Chinese New Year, also known as the “Lunar New Year,” is the most important festive holiday in the Chinese calendar.  Not only is this special occasion a huge deal in the Chinese culture, it is also the longest holiday!   15 Days of family traditions, cuisine delicacies, and exciting performances are enjoyed. In 2012, Chinese New Year officially started on January 23rd during the “Year of the Dragon.” Similar to the over-the-top décor and celebratory parties that the USA has for the New Year, during Chinese New Year people set off fireworks to ring in the New Year to ward off evil spirits and wish for good fortune.   Bright colors, whimsical dragons, dancers and feasts represent this festival.  The streets of New York City in Chinatown fill with thousands of Chinese New Year supporters as they cheer with happiness  (Watch the full video from the 2011 New Year).
